File Extension NZB
File extension NZB is commonly linked to the files containing headers of larger files fed by a newsgroup or Usenet. NZB files are applicable on cross platform environment. These files can be opened on machines installed with operating systems including Mac, Windows, and Linux making it versatile.
The idea of an NZB file was initiated by NewzBin thus, abbreviated the file format from its name. Headers of articles or segments of larger files are written on a single NZB containing the unique message ID of the specific article. A single feed is broken down into smaller segments referred to as articles. For newsreaders to download and concatenate articles to form the original feed, only valid articles containing similar message ID are downloaded.
Other forms of downloading files from a newsgroup involve the process of downloading all the headers available. This requires a lot of time to complete the process and acquire the files needed. Another way of achieving similar result is by implementing an XPAT search. However, the process requires heavy server resources to be used in order to produce the files. This may cause server unavailability due to some heavy processing.
The development of NZB files revolutionized the way data on Usenet are shared. However, NewzBin?s involvement in pornography can be considered as a disadvantage to some conservative users. NewzXXX, a sister site of NewzBin, was solely dedicated to providing pornography materials to its subscribers. The creation of the sister site eventually resulted to several payment processing issues which forced the developers to removed it as part of the main site.
Among the applications that can render NZB files include the Android Newsgroup Downloader from SB-Software. Most GUI applications are preferred by most users for their user-friendly features. There are also some text based Usenet Newsreaders such as Gnus, Lynx, and tin, a UNIX based conventional newsreader.
Other applications or newsreaders capable of opening NZB files include NewsLeecher, GrabIt, NewsBinPro, BNR, Newspro, Usenet Explorer, BNR2, Usenet Junkie, 123Newz, and Newsreactor. Some of these applications are offered free for download by their makers and some are available for a fee.
